Ambergris Caye in Belize is a tropical paradise that offers a plethora of activities and attractions for visitors. Whether you're a foodie, an adventure enthusiast, or a nature lover, this stunning island has something to offer everyone. In this blog post, we will guide you through the best things to do during your week-long visit to Ambergris Caye.
Indulge in the Local Cuisine
Ambergris Caye is known for its vibrant food scene, offering a wide range of culinary delights. For a true taste of Belizean cuisine, head to the local eateries and street food stalls. From mouthwatering seafood dishes to traditional Belizean staples like rice and beans, you'll find a variety of flavors to satisfy your taste buds. Some popular restaurants include El Fogon, Blue Water Grill, Angler's, and Elvi's Kitchen. No trip to Ambergris Caye is complete without a visit to "The Truck Stop" where you can choose from multiple food truck options. Rum Dog is just across the street for those who want to enjoy a drink while taking in the ocean breeze from this serene setting over the Caribbean Sea.
Embark on Exciting Excursions
During your stay in Ambergris Caye, make sure to explore the breathtaking natural wonders and thrilling activities the island has to offer. One must-do excursion is a visit to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where you can snorkel or dive alongside colorful coral reefs and a diverse array of marine life. Another popular adventure is exploring the ancient Mayan ruins of Altun Ha or Lamanai, where you can immerse yourself in Belize's rich history and culture.
Discover Pristine Snorkeling Spots
Ambergris Caye is a snorkeler's paradise, with crystal-clear turquoise waters teeming with marine life. One of the best snorkeling spots is Shark Ray Alley, where you can swim with nurse sharks and stingrays in their natural habitat. Another lesser known location is Mexico Rocks, known for its vibrant coral formations and abundant tropical fish. Don't forget to bring your underwater camera to capture these unforgettable moments!
Where to Buy Groceries and Fresh Fish
If you're planning to cook your own meals or stock up on snacks and drinks, there are several options for grocery shopping on Ambergris Caye. Two large supermarkets in San Pedro are Super Buy and Walk Mart. Both offer a wide selection of groceries, fresh produce, and household essentials. Keep in mind that everything that has been imported will cost a premium, and isn't always the freshest or healthiest option. Another popular option is The Greenhouse, which offers organic and specialty products, also at a premium.
Consider heading to the docks between 2 and 3 pm when the local fisherman return from their day of fishing. Fishermen are often willing to sell you some fish, or fillet it for you. Expect to pay anywhere from $15 to $25 USD for 2 to 3 pounds of fish. Grouper and Spanish Mackerel where available during my recent trip.
Should You Rent a Golf Cart?
Exploring Ambergris Caye is best done by golf cart, as it allows you the freedom to navigate the island at your own pace. Renting a golf cart is a popular choice among visitors, and there are several rental agencies available in San Pedro. It's important to note that driving is on the right-hand side of the road in Belize, and a valid driver's license is required. Renting a golf cart provides a convenient and fun way to explore the island's beaches, restaurants, and attractions.
Arriving in Belize City and Getting to Ambergris Caye
Most visitors to Ambergris Caye arrive in Belize City, which is served by an international airport. From there, you have the option of taking a short domestic flight to Ambergris Caye. Two popular airlines that operate flights to the island are Tropic Air and Maya Air. The flights are quick and offer stunning aerial views of the Belizean coastline. Once you arrive at the San Pedro airstrip, you can easily reach your accommodation by taxi or arrange for a transfer in advance. Water taxi's are a common way to travel to resorts located north of San Pedro and offer a unique experience.

Using Points and Miles to Travel to Belize
Flexible points programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards, Captial One Rewards, and Amex Membership Rewards offer versatile redemption options, allowing you to transfer points to various airline partners. If you're flying from Atlanta, consider leveraging Virgin Atlantic to book Delta flights, offering a seamless journey to Belize City. Virgin Atlantic typically has good award availability on Delta's flights to/from Belize City where each one-way flight is just 16,500 points (and taxes add just $100 for a roundtrip). American Airlines and its travel partners also present budget-friendly options, providing convenient connections from major US cities to Belize. You'll typically be looking at 10,000 to 15,000 points each way, but deals earlier this year dropped the price to just 5,000 points one way, and 7,500 points is still an option with the right type of points. Lastly, United and its travel partners offer even more opportunities for deals. By maximizing credit card rewards, you can enjoy the sun-soaked beaches and vibrant culture of Belize without draining your wallet.
